Drunken drivers to get 8-10 years in prison for causing fatal road accidents
Members of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine approved in principle the bill No. 7064 on preventing traffic fatalities
As reported by Censor.NET citing the statement by the press office of the Ukrainian parliament, 240 lawmakers supported the bill.
"The road fatality rate in Ukraine - 106 persons per million population - is almost twice as many as the EU’s average and exceeds the rate of any EU country. … It is noteworthy that 37 percent of all road accidents [in Ukraine] are caused by drivers under influence," the explanatory note to the bill reads.
The bill provides for 8 to 10 years in prison and a 10-year disqualification from driving for persons who caused moderate bodily injuries or death in a road accident while being under influence.
Those who caught behind the wheel after being previously disqualified from driving for abovementioned violations face 5-year imprisonment and indefinite disqualification.
