Australia introduced sanctions against Iran and Russian Federation for violating human rights and invading Ukraine
In response to the violation of human rights by Iran and Russia and the invasion of Ukraine, the Australian government introduced sanctions under the "Magnitsky Act" against 13 individuals and two legal entities from Russia and Iran.
This was reported by the press service of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Australia, Penny Wong, Censor.NET reports.
Sanctions, in particular, were introduced against Iran's morality police, the pro-government Basij paramilitary organization, and six people involved in the brutal suppression of protests that broke out in Iran in mid-September after the death of Mahsa Amini.
Restrictions have also been imposed against seven Russian citizens involved in the assassination attempt on former Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.
In addition, Australia joins partners in announcing further targeted sanctions against three Iranian individuals and one company involved in the supply of drones to Russia for use against Ukraine.
"Russia uses Iranian-made drones to launch strikes on the civilian population and critical infrastructure facilities to deprive the Ukrainian people of electricity, heat, and water in winter conditions...The Australian government is calling on countries to influence Russia to end its illegal, immoral war. Australia supports the people of Ukraine and the people of Iran and we will use all the strategies available to us to protect human rights - from dialogue and diplomacy to sanctions - in accordance with our values and interests," the Australian Foreign Ministry said.
