China accuses Russia of leaking information on arms deal talks - The Economist

The newspaper, citing an EU official familiar with the matter, reports that official Beijing is irritated by the leak, which it believes came from the Kremlin, of information about the arms sales talks.
China has categorically insisted that any support it provides to the Kremlin remains strictly confidential, as publicity undermines Beijing's claim to "remain neutral." They also noted that China's "peace initiative" was rejected by Ukraine's allies, in part because of leaks about possible arms sales to Russia, which made Beijing's initiative look like hypocrisy.
At the same time, The Economist notes that the West is still quite confident that China will not start actual arms supplies to the Kremlin in the current situation. In particular, EU High Representative Josep Borrell received relevant assurances from Chinese top diplomat Wang Yi on February 18. U.S. President Joe Biden also stated that he "does not expect a major initiative from China to supply weapons to Russia."
