"As of February 24, 2023, the total amount of damage to identified assets is estimated at $2.6 billion," the UNESCO report says.
Approximately $1.7 billion of this amount is attributed to "historic cities, buildings and sites filled with recognized cultural/social values," $650 million to tourist sites, $143 million to "movable cultural property and collections, cultural repositories," and $150 million to "buildings/workshops/studios dedicated to cultural and creative industries."
The report names Kharkiv region as the most affected region in Ukraine, which lost 30% of its cultural property. The losses are estimated at approximately $15.2 billion, which includes the loss of income from tourism, art, sports, entertainment, recreation, cultural education, and creative and cultural industries.
"The war has significantly affected the diversity and richness of culture and cultural heritage of Ukraine, damaging cultural infrastructure and assets, reducing livelihoods for creators, bearers and practitioners of culture, restricting access to culture and impeding the exercise of cultural rights," UNESCO said.
