Thousands of criminal proceedings have been initiated in the sphere of the natural environment, hundreds of war crimes against the environment, facts of ecocide have been exposed. And also - billions worth of damage to nature as a result of Russian armed aggression.
As Censor.NET informs, the General Prosecutor's Office reports this.
It is noted that Russia has been committing war crimes against the environment since the first days of the full-scale invasion. The total amount of damage to the environment as a result of the actions of the aggressor state amounts to UAH 1,970 billion.
The area of the territory contaminated by explosive objects is 174,000 square meters. According to this indicator, Ukraine is the first in the world. 2 million hectares of forests and 20% of protected areas were affected by pollution, fires and landmines.
The agency reminded that as a result of missile attacks on Ukraine's energy systems, for the first time in history, an emergency shutdown of all four Ukrainian nuclear power plants took place.
"Criminal proceedings have been registered on the facts of attacks on objects that contain dangerous forces - nuclear power plants and other nuclear objects, hydrotechnical structures, etc.
Currently, 190 criminal proceedings regarding war crimes against the environment are being investigated," the message reads.
The Office informed that 16 suspects were notified of the suspicion, and indictments against 10 persons were sent to the court.
Also, the first sentence in Ukraine for war crimes against the environment was handed down, passed in the case of the seizure of Kakhovka HPP facilities and the blowing up of the dam of the North Crimean Canal in the Kherson region. Two servicemen of the Russian Armed Forces were sentenced in absentia to 12 years in prison.
