Portugal supports Ukraine’s membership in NATO when appropriate conditions are met
Ukraine and Portugal signed a declaration that provides for Lisbon’s support for Kyiv, including in the context of European and Euro-Atlantic integration.
As Censor.NET informs with reference to the press service of the head of state, the document was approved during a telephone conversation on Saturday by President Volodymyr Zelensky and Prime Minister of the Portuguese Republic Antonio Costa.
"The Portuguese Republic will continue to provide political, financial, humanitarian and military support to Ukraine as much as it will be needed - individually and through international cooperation in the European Union, NATO, the UN and in other formats," the declaration reads.
In addition, Portugal "strongly supports" Ukraine in its reform efforts and in fulfilling the requirements necessary to start accession negotiations, pending a positive report from the European Commission.
Within NATO, Portugal continues to focus on direct support to Ukraine, in particular through the strengthened Comprehensive Package of Alliance assistance, in coordination with member countries and partners, continues to provide support for strengthening Ukraine's ability to defend itself and reminds that Ukraine has the right to choose its own security measures.
"The Portuguese Republic will continue to support Ukraine on the path to future membership and advocates for Ukraine to become a member of NATO when the appropriate conditions for this appear. Ukraine and the Portuguese Republic look forward to resolving all these issues at the upcoming NATO summit in Vilnius in July 2023," the document emphasizes.
