We expect suspicions of Russian war criminals from countries conducting their own investigations, - Prosecutor General Kostin
Our state expects that soon enough, countries conducting their own investigations into the war crimes of the aggressor country, the Russian Federation, will bring their own suspicions against the Russian occupiers.
This was stated by Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin, Censor.NET reports citing Interfax-Ukraine.
On Friday, at a press conference during the break of the international conference "United for justice. United for nature" international conference in Kyiv, Kostin suggested that foreign jurisdictions could also investigate environmental crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine on the basis of universal jurisdiction.
"We are in constant dialogue with more than 20 countries, and we are constantly negotiating with countries that have universal jurisdiction, in particular with the countries of the so-called Global South, which can also initiate criminal prosecution of war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine," Kostin said.
He concluded: "Not forgetting the investigations already launched in 20 plus countries that are independent, perhaps some of our colleagues will be ready, in particular, to investigate environmental crimes on the basis of universal jurisdiction. Because we want to see not only verdicts, but at least to see suspicions of Russian war criminals in the near future, not only from us - we have both verdicts and suspicions every day, not only at the level of the International Criminal Court, but also at the level of other countries that are investigating."
"This will be a very serious signal to everyone who continues to commit these war crimes. A signal that not only Ukraine, not only the ICC, but also other countries will prosecute them," the Prosecutor General added.
