Under the procedural guidance of the Kyiv Specialized Defense Prosecutor’s Office of the Central Region, procedural guidance is being carried out in criminal proceedings on the death of the Assistant Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Major Hennadii Chatiakov.
This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to the press service of the Specialised Defence Prosecutor's Office of the Central Region.
According to the investigation, on 06.11.2023, Chastiakov celebrated his birthday. He returned home with gifts from colleagues, including a gift box, which, among other things, contained 6 Western-type grenades marked D5.
"One of the grenades was picked up by the son of a serviceman. While taking the ammunition away from the child, the officer pulled the ring, which provoked an explosion. The 39-year-old major of the Armed Forces of Ukraine died on the spot. His 13-year-old son was hospitalized with serious injuries, and his 11-year-old daughter sustained minor injuries," the statement said.
Law enforcement officers seized 5 more similar grenades at the scene.
During an urgent search, 2 similar pieces of ammunition were seized from the colleague of the serviceman who made this dangerous "gift".
Currently, the causes and circumstances of the incident are being established, interrogations of eyewitnesses and witnesses are underway, and a range of inspections is being prepared.
The criminal proceedings were opened on the grounds of criminal offenses provided for in Part 1 of Art. 115 and Part 1 Art. 263 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
Earlier it was reported that Chastiakov was killed as a result of an unknown explosive device. This information was confirmed by the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Valerii Zaluzhnyi.
According to the National Police of Ukraine, the tragedy occurred in a residential complex in the Chaiky village in Kyiv region. After receiving a report of the explosion, the police urgently arrived at the scene.
According to preliminary information, a 39-year-old serviceman was killed by a grenade. His 13-year-old son was seriously injured. The boy is under the supervision of doctors.
