Opposition in Bundestag to put Taurus delivery to Ukraine to vote

The largest opposition party in the Bundestag, the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), is pressuring the federal government to provide Ukraine with Taurus cruise missiles.

This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to ntv.

CDU faction leader Friedrich Merz said that the party's parliamentary group wants to submit a proposal for a resolution to the Bundestag, which will put the Taurus delivery to a vote. The vote is to take place after a report by the Social Democratic Party of Germany's Defence Commissioner Eva Högl.

"We assess the situation in Ukraine as increasingly critical," Merz said.

He believes that the Ukrainian military currently has "no prospects" of pushing back Russian troops, and that the Taurus cruise missiles could help.

Merz also called on the government members who recently spoke in favour of the Taurus delivery, contrary to the position of SPD Chancellor Olaf Scholz, to "back up their words with actions" during the roll call vote.

The day before, Friedrich Merz once again called on the government of Olaf Scholz to transfer Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine. He stated that these missiles could destroy the Kerch Bridge in Crimea, "the most important supply route for the Russian invasion forces".
