Lithuania calls on EU to restrict food imports from Russia and Belarus

At a meeting of the EU Council of Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries, Lithuania called on the European Commission to take stricter measures to restrict imports of food products of Russian and Belarusian origin to the EU market.

This was stated by Lithuanian Deputy Minister of Agriculture Vytautas Abukauskas, Censor.NET reports citing Delfi.

"Lithuania has already tightened control over grain imported from Russia and other high-risk countries - every wagon or vehicle importing products is checked, both grain intended for the Lithuanian market and grain exported through the port of Klaipeda," he said.

Abukauskas noted that it is necessary to act together, as the decisions of individual EU countries to restrict imports will not have the desired result, as food imports, including grain, are freely available to other EU countries.

The Lithuanian deputy minister also welcomed the European Commission's proposal to increase duties on grain, oilseeds and oil products imported from Russia and Belarus, but stressed that the problem is much bigger.
