In the first reading, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law that provides for the possibility of exempting military personnel from criminal liability for prolonged absence without leave (prolonged AWOL) or desertion.

This was reported by Censor.NET with reference to the press service of the parliament.

In the first reading, the Verkhovna Rada voted for draft law No. 11322 on amendments to the Criminal Code and other laws relating to military service during martial law.

The law provides that military personnel may be exempted from criminal liability for prolonged AWOL or desertion if they have violated the law for the first time and wish to return to service.

It also proposes to improve the procedure for returning to service of such servicemen by court order.
