"It is important to free all Ukrainian hostages," - Poroshenko, Merkel hold phone talks

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko had a telephone conversation with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

"The sides discussed the security situation in the Donbas. Poroshenko expressed his concern about provocations on the part of Russian militants, including the use of heavy weapons, despite the announcement of the cease-fire Sept. 1.
"The sides agreed to intensify diplomatic efforts within the Trilateral Contact Group and the Normandy format for the safety of implementation of the Minsk agreements.
"The president thanked Germany and France for their principled position on extending sanctions against Russia until Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity are fully restored.
"Poroshenko and Merkel stressed the importance of liberating all hostages, including those illegally held in the territory of Russia.
"French President Francois Hollande was represented in the conversation by his diplomatic adviser," the statement notes.
