Deputy Justice Minister Yanchuk to lead Ukraine's agency for managing corrupt assets

The selection board has picked Deputy Justice Minister Anton Yanchuk for the post of chairman of the National Agency of Ukraine for detection, investigation and management of assets derived from corruption and other crimes.

Yanchuk's candidacy was supported by six out of seven board members, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrainski Novyny.

Yanchuk, 32, was appointed deputy justice minister on Jan. 21, 2015.

In 2007, he graduated from Kyiv's Taras Shevchenko National University (Master of Law) and proceeded to work in a number of law firms before being appointed advisor to justice minister in May 2014.

Yanchuk declared 494,000 hryvnia ($18,228) of income and 153,000 hryvnia ($5,645) in cash for 2015.

Yurii Butusov, Censor.NET chief editor and a board member, says Yanchuk is a young lawyer from a family of lawyers, who had worked for Arzinger law firm before 2014. He is also one of the authors of the law on the National Agency of Ukraine for detection, investigation and management of assets derived from corruption and other crimes and knows the matter perfectly.

"Only time will tell whether this was the right choice. The board members should now monitor both the appointment procedure and the work of the new body," Yaroslav Yurchyshyn, the board's secretary, said.
