Eight states tried to recruit agents among Ukrainian military in 2016, - SBU

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) claims eight foreign states sought to recruit agents among Ukrainian servicemen in 2016.

Censor.NET reports citing Ukrainski Novyny referring to SBU's last year report.

"According to information obtained by the SBU military counterintelligence in 2016, secret services of eight states tried to recruit agents among Ukrainian servicemen, gain access to classified information, latest military technologies, communication systems and air defense," the message says.

As reported, the SBU records intelligence activities and violations of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations by certain foreign diplomats. In particular, in 2016, the agency together with Ukraine's Foreign Ministry took measures for early withdrawal of a foreign diplomatic representative whose actions were at odds with the convention.

To prevent unlawful activities, SBU says, five demarches were delivered to foreign authorities, including a military attaché, two representatives of an international organization, who displayed unreasonable interest in restricted information, and a representative of a foreign special service.
