The first hearing of the cassation appeal filed by the lawyers of ex-Chief of Interior Ministry's Directed Surveillance Department Oleksii Pukach previously sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of journalist Heorhii Gongadze was held today.

During the meeting, Oleksandr Yeliashkevych - the defender of an affected person, human rights defender and journalist Oleksii Podolskyi - requested to challenge counsel of Myroslava Gongadze Valentyna Telychenko.

He accused Telychenko of serving the interests of the Prosecutor General's Office.

Telychenko replied that she had never held the position of Deputy Prosecutor General. She confirmed that Prosecutor General Yurii Lutsenko offered her this job, but she refused.
The judges decided that they would consider the request to challenge Telychenko at the next hearing after Myroslava Gongadze voiced her position regarding this issue.

The next hearing is scheduled for Nov. 16 at the request of several parties since the new counsels need to familiarize themselves with the case files.

As reported, the High Specialized Court of Ukraine for Civil and Criminal Cases started hearing the cassation appeal filed by ex-Chief of Interior Ministry's Directed Surveillance Department Oleksii Pukach previously sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of journalist Heorhii Gongadze. His lawyers requested to replace his life sentence by 15 years in prison.
