Amber extraction needs to be codified into law.
Prosecutor General of Ukraine Yurii Lutsenko said on Facebook, Censor.NET reports."After the January shooting in Olevsk, both local prosecutors and police leadership, who lived quietly in the midst of amber fever, were discharged. Today, together with the Security Service, we carried out first searches. Half a ton of amber and weapons have been seized. The country needs to make the issue into a law," Lutsenko wrote.
Larysa Sarhan, Lutsenko's press secretary, said the searches took place in Olevsk and other towns across the region. Law enforcers identified those involved both in illegal production and sale of amber and the recent shoot-out in Olevsk.
On Jan. 16, at around 1 a.m., a shoot-out involving several dozen people occurred in downtown Olevsk, the Zhytomyr region. The incident left seven people wounded, one of whom died while being treated. According to the police, the conflict was triggered by a casual misunderstanding.
Meanwhile, the police have said the conflict is not connected with illegal extraction of amber in the region.
On Jan. 24, another participant of the shooting died in hospital.
Five participants have been remanded in custody, another one put under house arrest.
Following an internal investigation, 12 police officers have been brought to disciplinary responsibility.
