Il-76 case: Sister of deceased paratrooper slams Poroshenko's support for Gen. Nazarov, returns brother's Order For Courage. PHOTOS
In response to President Poroshenko's open support for convicted general Nazarov, Iliana Haiduk, the sister of Ilia Haiduk killed in the crash of Il-76 aircraft in 2014, has returned the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi 3rd class awarded to her brother posthumously.
Censor.NET reports referring to Iliana Haiduk's Facebook page."Petro Oleksiiovych, in response to your open support for General Nazarov convicted for negligence that led to the death of 49 soldiers, I want to give you back the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi 3rd class which you awarded to my brother posthumously. The guilt of the general was proved by judges and the prosecution, and yet you give your own assessment of the verdict, violating the Constitution of Ukraine," she said.

"You kept silent as supreme commander-in-chief when military patriots were tried, but when a general is tried, you are ready to stand up for him... General Nazarov is not a military general, as you mentioned in your speech. He himself admitted the fact in court.
"Shortly after the Il-76 crash, you awarded General Nazarov the same Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi For Courage 3rd class that you awarded to our soldiers posthumously, without specifying where exactly he showed courage, or maybe for 49 dead soldiers or disposal of materiel? You ignored the request of the parents to suspend the general for the period of investigation as well as the request of the families of the deceased to meet with you. On the anniversary of the Il-76 crash, you didn't offer condolences to Ukrainians like you did, let's say, in the case with MH17 victims. Do you regard Ukrainians as inferior people?" she summed up.
On June 14, 2014, Ukraine's Il-76 with 40 troopers and nine members of the crew was shot down during landing in the Luhansk airport. All people on board were killed.
Dec. 17, 2015, the Pavlohrad city district court of the Dnipropetrovsk region started a trial into the Il-76 case.
On March 27, 2017, the Pavlohrad city district court sentenced Nazarov to seven years in prison under article 425 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. He was not deprived of the rank of major general. The moral damage suffered by the families of the victims is to be compensated by the Ministry of Defense. However, only the closest relatives - parents and wives - will receive a compensation.
The amount of compensation is 500,000 hryvnia ($18,367) for each family.
Commenting on the court verdict, President Poroshenko stated: "First of all, as commander-in-chief, I cannot remain silent after a civil court has sentenced the battlefield general to seven-year imprisonment. Our servicemen are doing their duty defending Ukraine sometimes at the cost of their own lives. I understand the grief of families. But the adversary who treacherously invaded our land is actually the one to be blamed for our heroes' deaths. Over the past three years, we have raised a new generation of self-motivated, courageous, and sometimes daring commanders who defend our Ukraine. It would be unwise to hog-tie them with court rulings from the point of view of defense and security. That is why I intend to propose the restoration of special military courts in line with existing international practices."
