26 advanced van-mounted weight and dimensions control systems were presented in Kyiv today. The mobile systems will soon move to various regions of Ukraine to keep refurbished highways in good condition.

Ukraine's Infrastructure Minister Volodymyr Omelian wrote on Facebook, Censor.NET reports.

This is the first batch of 78 systems acquired by the Ministry with funds contributed by the European Commission.

"The rest of the vehicles should arrive by the end of the year. Moreover, these multipurpose laboratories are actually capable of providing full range of oversight and approval functions of the transport inspection and next year they will be additionally equipped with video surveillance systems and connected to the main servers of the Infrastructure Ministry. Even the EU has only several such systems," Omelian said.

He stressed that monitoring vehicles' weight was critical for maintaining the country's highways in proper condition.

"Spending immense public funds for repairing highways only makes sense if these highways are used properly and carefully. If a truck weighting 60, 80 or even over 100 tons is traveling on a freshly repaired road and it is followed by a dozen of similar heavyweight trucks, the highway will turn into a rut in a matter of weeks, it will start cracking and became poor in half a year. This will no longer happen," the minister said.

He also recalled the need for the parliament to adopt a law stiffening responsibility for overweighting of trucks.
"This is definitely a victory. But it will be ultimate only if the parliament passes a law on harsher punishment for overweighting of trucks and the transition to automated weight control that would completely eliminate the human factor and, with it, corruption in the State Service of Ukraine for Transport Safety," Omelian said
