В США впервые за 12 лет демократы получили большинство в палате представителей Конгресса
Как передает РИА «Новости», по последним данным, республиканцы сохраняют минимальное большинство мест в сенате, но итоги выборов по четырем штатам еще не подведены.
По прогнозной оценке телекомпании Эй-би-си, при минимально необходимых для победы 15 местах в палате представителей демократы получат от 28 до 36 мест.
На выборах в сенат демократы получили три из необходимых им для победы шести мест, на выборах губернаторов они получили дополнительно шесть мест.
При остающихся все еще под вопросом четырех сенатских местах на состоявшихся во вторник в США промежуточных выборах в конгресс и выборах губернаторов ”республиканцы пока не потеснили ни одного демократа”, отмечает телекомпания.
”Сегодня мы вошли в историю”, - заявила после объявления предварительных результатов выборов своим сторонникам лидер демократов в палате представителей Нэнси Пелоси, которая, как ожидается, теперь станет первой в истории США женщиной-спикером палаты представителей.
Согласно конституции США, спикер палаты представителей является третьим лицом в государстве после президента и вице-президента и возглавит страну в случае, если с ними что-либо случится.

"We took a whipping last night, and we understand that," DeLay told CNN"s "American Morning." "The Democrats didn"t win, the Republicans lost."
Democrats put together a sound coalition, and they voted against Republicans because "they hate this [Iraq] war, period. They don"t want to fight this war," he said. There also are conservatives who oppose the war, stances that are a recipe for defeat, DeLay added.
As for Iraq, Pelosi and the Democrats have yet to explicitly outline their plan for U.S. involvement in the region, but unlike many of her counterparts, Pelosi voted against authorizing the war.
And what about the persnickety allegation that she will skipper tax hikes through the House? Sure she will, said the shoo-in speaker.
"We will revisit the tax cuts at the high end in order to give tax cuts to the middle class," she said.
Voters chose to overturn our current one-party political structure and returned checks and balance to our government. November 7 also demonstrated that the American electorate is far more discerning and independent-minded than either political party or our elites would like to believe.
While the Democratic Party was the clear winner, I don"t believe for even a moment that the Democrats" ideals prevailed over Republican ideals. Election Day was middle-class America"s declaration of independence from a Republican-led administration and Congress that for six years has been telling working men and women and their families in this country to shut up, listen up and go to hell.
The middle class just returned the favor and demonstrated discernment while delivering their loud message to Washington, D.C.
The meetings come two days after the Democrats trounced Republicans in the House elections and as a power shift in the Senate appears likely.
Though the fate of the Senate hinges on the official outcome of the Virginia Senate race between Democrat Jim Webb and GOP incumbent George Allen, Webb"s victory appeared likely. That would give Democrats a 51-49 advantage in the House, if you count two independents who have said they will caucus with the party.
Bush, who also met with his Cabinet on Thursday morning, is expected to make a statement in the White House Rose Garden at 11:35 a.m. ET.
"My friends, sometimes winds -- political or otherwise -- can blow the limbs off branches or break limbs. But a deep-rooted tree will keep growing," Allen said from Alexandria, Virginia, with his wife, Susan, and young daughter, Brooke, by his side.
"The people of Virginia have spoken, and I respect their decision. The Bible teaches us there is a time and place for everything, and today I called and congratulated Jim Webb."
Webb"s win marks the first time the Democrats have snared 51 votes they needed to control the Senate since May 2001. The GOP regained the majority in the Senate after the 2002 midterm elections.
Webb, a former Navy secretary in the Reagan administration, has scheduled an appearance with reporters at 4:15 p.m. ET Thursday.
A few minutes after Allen"s concession, top Democrats gathered near Capital Hill.
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada told a roaring crowd, "The election"s over. It"s time for a change. It"s time for bipartisanship, it"s time for open government, transparency, and it"s a time for results."
New York Sen. Charles Schumer said, "Will we stand up to the president when we think he is wrong? Yes. But our real mission is to work together and help the American family and make a better America, and we pledge today that we will never lose sight of that, our true mission."
Even before today"s concession, Republicans were resigned to facing a Democratic majority next year, one GOP member said Thursday.
"I think if you ask any Republican in Congress right now, they"re working under the assumption that they"ll be in the minority in both the House and the Senate," Sen. John Sununu of New Hampshire said.
Allen trailed Webb by 8,805 votes Thursday afternoon in the last unsettled race of the 33 Senate contests on Tuesday"s ballots, the Virginia State Board of Elections announced.
That margin grew from a roughly 7,200-vote gap Wednesday afternoon after 55 of Virginia"s 134 electoral districts completed their canvasses of the results.
Webb declared victory early Wednesday, and The Associated Press declared him the winner Wednesday night.
Webb"s win puts the new Senate ****** at 49 Democrats, 49 Republicans and two independents -- Bernie Sanders of Vermont and Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, who have said they would caucus with the Democrats.
Democratic challengers knocked off five other Republican incumbents in Tuesday"s Senate races and won 29 seats in the House to claim control of that chamber for the first time since 1994.
