Russian ships are transporting large quantities of artillery shells and other ammunition from Iran across the Caspian Sea to replenish the troops fighting in Ukraine.

According to Censor.NET, citing UNIAN, The Wall Street Journal reports.

According to the newspaper, over the past six months, Russian cargo ships have transported more than 300,000 artillery shells and a million rounds of ammunition from Iran to Russia.

The data on deliveries was provided by the United States, the WSJ reports.

According to officials in the Middle East, the last batch of Iranian weapons for Russia was shipped in early March aboard the Russian cargo ship Rasul Gamzatov. The ship carried 1,000 containers with 2,000 artillery shells.

It is noted that the Iranian delegation to the UN and the Russian Ministry of Defense did not respond to requests for comment on this issue. The White House National Security Council also declined to comment.

The WSJ writes that the US and its allies have been looking for ways to disrupt Iran's arms shipments to Russia. According to U.S. officials, Iran has mostly used cargo planes to deliver weapons to Russia, making intervention virtually impossible. And action in the Caspian Sea would require assistance from the former Soviet republics on its shores.
