Britain wants those working for Russia to register

The UK government intends to oblige everyone working for the Russian government in the United Kingdom to register. If those who work for the Russian government fail to do so, they will face up to five years in prison.

This was stated by British Secretary of State for Security Dan Jarvis during a speech in parliament on April 1, Yahoo News reports, Censor.NET informs.

He stressed that Russia poses a serious threat to the UK's national security.

"In recent years, its hostile actions have ranged from the use of a deadly nerve agent in Salisbury, to espionage, arson and cyber attacks, including attacks on UK MPs through phishing campaigns, and Russia's clearly illegal invasion of Ukraine has underscored its intent to undermine European and global security," the minister said.

He said that Russia will be added to the Foreign Influence Registration Program, a status reserved for nations that pose a security risk to UK interests.

This means that anyone working for Russia in the UK must declare it, otherwise they will face five years in prison.

Jarvis added that registration will be available online from July 1 this year.

The publication also notes that the program was originally expected to come into effect in 2024, but in August the new Labor government confirmed the delay in its implementation. Iran was the first country to be added to the program.
