The Security Service's counterintelligence prevented the escape from Ukraine of a militant from Russian armed groups who had been fighting in Donetsk Oblast.

Militant "Somali" was caught in Kovel

As a result of pre-emptive action, the perpetrator was detained in a hotel in Kovel, Volyn Oblast, from where he planned to leave for the European Union, according to Censor.NET.

The investigation established that the suspect was a resident of Donetsk who joined the Russian-controlled "Somali" armed group of the so-called "DPR" in 2015.

As a member of the militant group, he took part in the fighting for Donetsk airport, where he was wounded and "written off" from the enemy unit.

At the end of October 2025, the suspect, posing as a displaced person, left for the western border of our country to issue a Ukrainian passport for going to the EU.

SSU officers established the location of the perpetrator in advance and detained him while he was preparing to flee.

Information about the detainee's possible involvement with Russian special services, which may have planned his "business trip" to carry out subversive activities on the territory of the European Union, is also being verified.

During searches of the suspect's hotel room, Russian and "DPR" passports were found, as well as a "military ID" and insignia of the armed forces of the aggressor country.

Currently, Security Service investigators have informed the suspect of suspicion of violating two articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:

  • high treason committed under martial law;
  • participation in the activities of armed formations not provided for by law.

The perpetrator is in custody without the right to bail. He faces 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.
