Recent developments around the 'Tomos of Autocephaly,' which marks a significant milestone for the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), continue to shape religious and national identities in the region. Granted on January 6, 2019, by Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the Tomos declared the OCU as an independent church, severing its previous ties to the Russian Orthodox Church. This pivotal event not only redefined the religious landscape in Ukraine but also echoed across geopolitical lines, with 320 parishes shifting allegiance to the independent Ukrainian church.

Despite challenges, the OCU under the leadership of Metropolitan Epiphanius maintains that it does not fall under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Istanbul. While political figures like the Russian President have criticized this move as divisive, Ukrainian leaders, including former President Poroshenko, continue to uphold the terms of the Tomos, urging unity and resisting external pressures.
