US for Ukraine - what bills need to be voted

US for Ukraine - what bills need to be voted

Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and its continuing wars of aggression have finally awakened the world into recognizing and responding to Russia’s imperialism. The invasion has resulted in thousands of deaths and forced millions to flee their homes. Many of the 20 million Americans whose heritage lies in the Ukraine or  Central and East European (CEE) region are descended from refugees of Russian imperialism and serve as a warning for us to not be naive. Unless Russian imperialism is defeated, we risk the freedom, democracy, and sovereignty of the Free World. Therefore, every effort must be taken to combat hybrid warfare, military aggression, disinformation, cyber-attacks, corruption, energy weaponization, nuclear threats, and crimes against humanity.

The CEEC believes that a decisive Ukrainian victory matters for the national security of the United States and its NATO allies. That's why the coalition has been working hard to support legislation aimed at strengthening Ukraine and countering Russian aggression. Here are some of the bills that the US-Ukraine  and CEEC  coalition supports and why they are important:

  1. Ukraine Security Partnership Act (S. 1781/H.R. 4227): This bill authorizes $300 million annually in security assistance to Ukraine, including lethal defensive weapons. It also requires the Department of Defense to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to enhance the defense capabilities of Ukraine and its allies. This bill is important because it will help Ukraine defend itself against Russian aggression and send a clear message to Russia that its actions will not be tolerated.

  2. Countering Russian Influence Fund Act (S. 1419/H.R. 3099): This bill authorizes $5 billion over five years to counter Russian influence and aggression in Europe and Eurasia. It also creates a fund to support democratic reforms, anti-corruption efforts, and independent media in Ukraine and other countries vulnerable to Russian influence. This bill is important because it recognizes the broader threat posed by Russia and provides resources to counter its malign activities.

  3. Secure 5G and Beyond Act of 2022 (S. 3839): This bill requires the development of a strategy to secure 5G networks and technologies, including measures to address supply chain risks and vulnerabilities. It also establishes a grant program to support the deployment of secure 5G networks in countries vulnerable to Russian or Chinese influence. This bill is important because 5G networks will be critical to future economic and national security, and it is important to ensure they are secure and resilient.

  4. The Sergei Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Reauthorization Act of 2021 (S. 93/H.R. 133): This bill expands the scope of the Magnitsky Act to include human rights abuses in any country, not just Russia. It also authorizes the President to impose sanctions on individuals responsible for human rights abuses, corruption, or other malign activities. This bill is important because it provides a powerful tool to hold individuals accountable for their actions and deter future abuses.

By supporting these bills, the we  are sending a strong message that the United States stands with Ukraine and is committed to countering Russian aggression.
