German Chancellor Olaf Scholz sees no signs that Putin can abandon his imperialist plans, so he considers it necessary to increase investments in defense.
This was stated by the politician on Saturday during a meeting with citizens in his constituency in Potsdam, informs Censor.NЕТ referring to Ukrinform.
"Every time I talk to Putin, he says very clearly that he wants to conquer something... He just wants to conquer a part of Ukrainian territory by force," said Scholz, who called the Russian president a few days ago.
He considers such phone conversations necessary, because they can show whether there is at least some change in the Kremlin's attitude towards the war in Ukraine.
The Chancellor noted that Russian losses in the war could be very high.
"We do not know exactly how many Russian soldiers were killed. But it can be 100 thousand," he suggested.
Scholz also reminded that the Russian leadership in the past has already demonstrated the cruelty of its military. As an example, he cited Syria and Chechnya, where entire cities were "wiped out".
The German Chancellor reaffirmed the course on the increase of expenditures on the maintenance of the Bundeswehr. He stressed that NATO countries should be powerful enough that no one would dare to attack them.
