Measles outbreak registered in Odesa region

48 children have been diagnosed with measles in Shevchenkove village (the Odesa region). Parents refused to vaccinate them for religious reasons.

Kili united territorial community head Pavlo Boichenko said this on Monday, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrinform.

"As of noon, 48 children had been diagnosed with measles. An emergency meeting of the city council has been held, and it decided to temporarily close school and infant school in Shevchenkove village and introduce quarantine measures within the area," said Boichenko.

He also added that the outbreak of measles was due to parents’ irresponsibility as they had ignored numerous warnings and calls of doctors to vaccinate their children. There are three big religious communities in Shevchenkove village, such as Pentecostal movement that refuses to vaccinate their children out of religious convictions.

Meanwhile, two out of 48 young patients have been taken for treatment to Odesa regional hospital.

As reported earlier, more than 5,000 people got measles in Ukraine since the beginning of 2019.

At least four people have died of measles this year. In 2018, 16 people died as a result of the disease.
