The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, responded to the petition, the author of which suggested replacing the name "Russia" with the name "Moscovia", and instead of "Russian" use "Moscow".

The answer was published on the website of the head of state, Censor.NET reports.-

The President replied that the legal bases of relations regarding the names of geographical objects, which include states, are regulated by the Law of Ukraine No. 2604-IV of 2005 "On Geographical Names". In addition, this proposal has international legal aspects.

He pointed out that "the issue raised in the petition needs to be carefully worked out both in terms of the historical and cultural context and in view of the possible international legal consequences."

Zelensky appealed to Prime Minister Denys Shmygal with a request to comprehensively work out this issue together with scientific institutions.

The author of the petition, Valeriya Shakhvorostova, emphasized that the name "Moscovia" was used in European and some Asian languages. This name also appears on many historical maps of the 16th-19th centuries, which were made in Europe before and after the renaming of the Muscovite Empire to the All-Russian Empire."

"Russia has existed for only 301 years" - since October 22, 1721, when Moscow Tsar Peter I proclaimed the Moscow kingdom "the Russian Empire", - the petition states.
