Poland will check social benefits of refugees who left country

Poland will start checking social benefits received by Ukrainian refugees. Part of the funds is planned to be returned.

Rzeczpospolita writes about this, Censor.NET reports with reference to RBC-Ukraine.

The check concerns those Ukrainians who left Poland for more than 30 days and at the same time received social assistance. This makes it possible to make amendments to the law on aid, which entered into force on January 28.

It is known that payments to approximately 3,200 citizens of Ukraine were suspended during the month these amendments came into force. They broke the law by leaving Poland for more than 30 days.

"If these people return to Poland within 30 days from the date of departure, they will not lose the legality of their stay in Poland and the payment of benefits will be resumed.
Withholding the payment immediately after the day of departure based on the amended act allowed us to avoid overpayment of benefits," explained ZUS spokesman Pavel Zhebrovskyi.

Previously, ZUS received information about the departure of citizens from Poland only one month after the date of crossing the border. This led to numerous overpayments to citizens who did not return to Poland after 30 days.

Paying authorities, in particular, the Social Insurance Institution, without knowing about the person's departure, paid her benefits to which she was not actually entitled. Only later did they receive information from the border guards that this person retroactively lost the right to legal stay," ZUS explained.
