The chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, believes that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin can stand trial for crimes committed during Russia’s war against Ukraine, despite Moscow’s arguments that he is not covered by the court’s rulings.

He said this in an interview with CNN, reports Censor.NET with reference to LigaBusinessInform.

Russia has not ratified the Rome Statute. Given this, it is unlikely that Putin will be brought under the jurisdiction of the court, the TV channel writes.

But in an interview with CNN, Kareem Khan pointed to the historic trials of Nazi war criminals former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic and former Liberian leader Charles Taylor as examples of seemingly untouchable figures who eventually came to justice.

"All of them were powerful, influential personalities, but they ended up in courtrooms," he said.

The TV channel notes that the court's issuance of a warrant for Putin's arrest has already made history — he is the first head of state of a permanent member of the UN Security Council to be issued an arrest warrant.
