The situation around the rebellion initiated by the head of the Wagner PMC, Yevgeny Prigozhyn, shows that for the first time, Russian President Putin is facing a direct challenge to his leadership in Russia.

This was stated by US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller, reports Censor.NЕТ with reference to Ukrinform.

"It's certainly something new to see President Putin's leadership being directly challenged. It's something new to have Evgeny Prigozhyn directly question the rationale for this war and say that the war is being waged on the basis of lies," the State Department official said.

He emphasized that the United States had spoken openly about this before, but had not seen similar statements from representatives close to the Russian leadership until now.

"These are all significant steps. And I think we will see what consequences this will have," the US foreign policy official said.

At the same time, he called the evolving situation "dynamic" and recalled that the US administration was also responding to the events. According to him, President Biden spoke with allies and partners. Secretary Blinken had a phone conversation with members of the G7, and he also discussed the situation with the foreign ministers of Ukraine, Turkey, and Poland.

"Today we are continuing discussions with our allies and partners," Miller said.

He also emphasized that the United States is committed to continuing its unwavering support for Ukraine regardless of how events in Russia develop.
