Ukraine will stop transit of Russian gas to Europe at end of 2024, - Chernyshov

Ukraine is ready to abandon gas transit, especially because Russia is not fulfilling the terms of the contract. Naftogaz of Ukraine will not continue transiting Russian gas after the contract expires in 2024.

Oleksii Chernyshov, Chairman of the Naftogaz of Ukraine, said this in an interview with Radio Svoboda, Censor.NET reports.

"Gazprom does not pay under its contract for the Sohranivka gas distribution station (which is actually in the occupied zone), so Naftogaz does not receive enough funding to actually provide (transit - ed.) and fulfills its obligations regardless, filing lawsuits against Gazprom to fulfill its obligations," Chernyshov said.

However, Ukraine continues transit solely to support its European counterparts.

"There are no other reasons, but we cannot deprive some EU countries, which are our partners, of the opportunity to receive natural gas and prepare for winter," Chernyshov explained.

The head of Naftogaz added that the EU plans to completely stop consuming Russian gas by 2027, so it does not insist on continuing Ukrainian transit.
