Hamas’ attack on Israel and the situation in the Gaza Strip not only distracted the attention of the world community from the war in Ukraine but also damaged Kyiv’s efforts to attract new allies and organize a peace process.

This was reported by The Wall Street Journal, Censor.NET reports with reference to UNIAN.

After conferences in Denmark, Saudi Arabia, and Malta, Ukrainian and European officials hoped to convene a summit of world leaders by the end of the year to discuss Volodymyr Zelenskyy's proposed peace formula. But according to Western diplomats, this is now unlikely.

Ukraine and its allies hoped to involve large countries that take a neutral position (Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, ideally China) in the formulation and approval of the principles of territorial integrity, sovereignty, political independence of states, the need to avoid the use of force to resolve conflicts, writes WSJ. But Israel's war with Hamas complicated the process, giving rise to new contradictions in relations between the West and the leading powers of the Arab and developing world, which Ukraine wanted to win over to its side.

The conflict in Israel has destroyed months of work to bring developing countries to Ukraine's side, when Western countries tried to portray Russia as a violator of international law, responsible for the deaths of civilians and the humanitarian catastrophe in Ukraine, officials and diplomats said. The humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip in developing countries has been compared to the Ukrainian situation and blamed for hypocrisy by Western countries that have largely supported Israel.

At the end of October, a meeting was held in Malta, where they were looking for ways to implement the Ukrainian "peace formula". This is the third round of such international negotiations, 66 countries sent their delegates. Unlike last time, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates and China were not among them. However, the Office of the President noted that international support for the Ukrainian vision of peace is growing.
