Shooting in Prague: more than 15 dead, police identify shooter

Czech police chief Martin Vondrashek said that as of the evening, the death toll from the shooting at Charles University in Prague had exceeded 15, and 24 more people were under medical care.

According to Vondrášek, the shooting was opened by a 24-year-old philosophy student. He had killed his father in his hometown before traveling to Prague. The police received information that he had traveled to the capital to commit suicide, after which a police operation was launched and the building was evacuated. Later, the shooter's lifeless body was found. It is being investigated whether he shot himself or was shot by the police, who also used weapons.
The operation is ongoing and the number of victims may increase.
Minister of the Internal Affairs Vit Rakusan called the incident an unprecedented event.
It is known that the Czech government will hold an emergency meeting at 21:00 (22:00 Kyiv time).
Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, expressed her condolences to Prague on social network X.
"I am shocked by the senseless brutality of the shooting that claimed several lives in Prague today. I express my deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to the Czech people as a whole. We stand and mourn with you," the European politician wrote.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy also expressed his condolences to the families of the victims of the shooting in Prague. The head of state wrote about this on the social network X.
"I am deeply shocked by the news of the tragic events in Prague, which resulted in the deaths and injuries of civilians. I express my sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wish a speedy recovery to the wounded," Zelenskyy said.
As reported, the Czech police eliminated the shooter during an operation in the center of Prague at Charles University, dozens of people were injured and some were killed.
