Stefanchuk: There is no overwhelming number of resignations from People’s Deputies

The current composition of the parliament is the smallest in the history of Ukraine: 401 people’s deputies remain in the Verkhovna Rada. The Constitution stipulates that the Verkhovna Rada becomes incapable of functioning if there are fewer than 300 people’s deputies.
This was stated by the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk, Censor.NET reports with reference to Interfax-Ukraine.
Stefanchuk explained that, according to the law, by-elections cannot be held during martial law, so "this is the composition with which we need to finalize this convocation."
"We must proceed from the fact that during martial law, the parliament must be legitimate and work. This is primarily due to the fact that it is the parliament that approves the presidential decree on martial law, makes the most important decisions during the war, the budget (including the war budget), and important decisions related to mobilization and demobilization. That is why we need a critical number of deputies," he said.
The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada expects that the parliament will not have to terminate the powers of many deputies early, as he has not received a large number of applications for their intention to resign. "I have heard that some deputies say that this is too much of a responsibility for them, so they would like to resign early. But I don't have a huge number of applications," Stefanchuk said.
He believes that all people's deputies "clearly realize the mission and the role they have been entrusted with to turn from a parliament of war into a winning parliament in this war."
"We have to make all the necessary decisions and ensure the country's activities. So I really hope that all these internal torments will pass, because we have one big goal. I really hope that there will be no general resignation of mandates," the speaker added.
