War in Middle East also affects Ukraine – Baerbock

Due to the war in the Middle East, the media do not report on large-scale Russian attacks in Ukraine.

This was stated by German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock during a panel discussion "Making a Dangerous World Safe" at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Censor.NET reports with reference to Ukrinform.

According to her, what is happening is a disaster for the Israelis, for the population of Gaza, and for the whole world. Diplomats, the minister said, are working to ensure that "the spark does not burn the entire region."

"And not just this region. We are also feeling the effects in Ukraine, in Europe: The media do not report on the largest Russian attacks against civilians in Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian invasion," Baerbock said.

Germany, the Foreign Minister reminded, does not call for a permanent or long-term ceasefire between Israel and Palestine, but calls for a sustainable truce, because it can only be achieved if both sides are ready for it. To do so, they need to stop blaming each other, stop saying that the other side should start first, and find a common starting point to move toward a two-state solution.

"We are now in a vicious circle. It is the duty of the international community, of those who believe in the rule of law, to find a way out of it," Baerbock added.

She believes that Palestinians can only live in peace and security if Israelis also live in peace and security, without rockets flying at them. Burbock insists that the international community must send a clear message that Hamas must lay down its arms, but that Israel must also change its strategy, which is currently causing many civilian casualties.

In general, the Minister emphasized that the situation is not black and white, it divides not only the parties to the conflict but also societies in other countries. Burbock called on the world to be more active in ending the conflict.

"The worst thing we can do is wait and see. This is not an alternative....This position, as we have seen over the past 3 months, only leads to further escalation," she concluded.
