Russia may use non-strategic nuclear weapons – IISS report

Russia attaches increasing importance to nuclear weapons as a means of deterring and overcoming NATO.

According to Censor.NET, with reference to Voice of America, this is stated in a report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).

William Alberke, Director of Strategy, Technology and Arms Control at the IISS, believes that Russia could strike with non-strategic nuclear weapons, given that NATO lacks the resolve to take the appropriate step. He suggests that the Russian authorities do not consider the US tactical nuclear weapons arsenal a serious threat.

According to the IISS, Moscow is convinced that it will be able to respond in a timely manner to an increase in the US nuclear presence in Europe.

"Russia now has less confidence in its conventional capabilities because of everything it has lost in the war in Ukraine," Alberke said.

The expert added that shorter-range nuclear weapons, known as non-strategic nuclear weapons, are becoming increasingly important for Moscow

"Russia has mainly short- and medium-range, air-, land- and sea-based missiles capable of delivering nuclear warheads across the entire theater of operations and capable of threatening the entire NATO. NATO itself lacks the countermeasures to match Russia's capabilities."
