Europe needs to have special representative for Ukraine to play significant role in negotiations - Stubb

Stubb suggests the EU should have a special representative for Ukraine

President of Finland Alexander Stubb believes that the European Union should have a special representative for Ukraine in order to play a significant role in the peacekeeping process.

The politician expressed this idea at the annual Munich Security Conference, Reuters reports, Censor.NET informs.

Stubb said that the European Union needs to do "something similar to what was done in Kosovo," referring to the fact that the EU had a special envoy for Kosovo, Martti Ahtisaari.

"Europe should have a special envoy, like Martti Agtisaari (for Kosovo), and a deputy envoy at the level of... Kellogg, and in this sense we will get some skin in the game," the Finnish president said.

His idea was supported by Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic.

"What we have been lacking in Ukraine in recent years is one person who is highly respected by everyone, who is reckoned with in Moscow, who is reckoned with in Kyiv and who has the support of Washington and European capitals, of the leaders of the Global South, who could have the authority to lead peace negotiations," the politician said.

The US does not see Europe at the negotiating table

Earlier, US President Donald Trump's special envoy Keith Kellogg said that there would be no European representatives at the table to resolve the war in Ukraine, but that Europe's interests would be taken into account.

After that, it was reported that French President Emmanuel Macron was convening an urgent meeting of European leaders in Paris to negotiate on Ukraine.
