Rutte: China will evaluate peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine as it pursues ambitions in Indo-Pacific region

NATO Secretary General Rutte

Currently, there is no peace agreement on Ukraine, and the process of its preparation is ongoing. But if this process is dominated by Russia rather than the West, China will draw its own conclusions from this development and realize its ambitions in the Indo-Pacific region.

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said this today in Bosnia and Herzegovina, during a conversation with students at the University of Sarajevo, Censor.NET reports citing Ukrinform.

"Obviously, this should be a good deal. Because there is one person who will evaluate it in the end. And that is the general secretary of the Communist Party of China, Xi Jinping. If he feels that Russia has gained the upper hand, and not the West, he will start thinking - hey, this is an interesting development, what does this mean for my ambitions? And we know what his ambitions are in the Indo-Pacific. I think the United States is very concerned about that. So we need a good deal, both for the Ukrainians and for peace in the world," Rutte said.

He called President Trump's efforts to "break the deadlock in Ukraine" "good".

"President Trump is right: there is no peace agreement yet. There is a certain working process. Tomorrow there will be a meeting between Ukrainians and the United States. There has already been a meeting between the United States and the Russians. Here in Europe, people are thinking about what a security assurance mission might look like if it is necessary to enforce a ceasefire or peace agreement," the NATO chief said.

He noted that there are already certain models for providing security guarantees for Ukraine, including those developed in France and the United Kingdom.

"Hopefully, we will have this (agreement - ed.) soon," Rutte added.

To recap, the day before, US President Donald Trump said that he believes Russian dictator Vladimir Putin that he wants to achieve peace. Trump claims that it is "increasingly difficult for him to deal with Ukraine" regarding peace agreements.
