Trump on Le Pen’s sentence: "Very much like our country"

US President Donald Trump, commenting on the ban on French far-right leader Marine Le Pen from running for president for five years after her conviction for embezzlement of European Parliament funds, compared the trial to the trials against him in 2024.
The Hill writes about this with reference to Trump's statement to journalists, Censor.NET reports.
"This is a big deal, this is a very big deal. I know all about it. And many people thought that she would never be convicted. And I don't know what that conviction means, but she was banned from running for five years, and she was the leading candidate. This is like this country, this is very much like this country," Trump said.
As a reminder, the leader of the National Front, Marine Le Pen, was sentenced to four years in prison in France - two years suspended and two years of arrest with an electronic bracelet.
Trump's trial
In 2024, Donald Trump became the first former US president to stand trial in a criminal court. The case concerned payments to porn star Stormy Daniels, which caused a significant public outcry.
Trump was accused of trying to conceal a $130,000 payment to porn star Daniels (real name Stephanie Clifford) before the 2016 election. Daniels claimed that she had a sexual relationship with him in 2006 after meeting him at a charity golf tournament.
As part of the trial, he was charged with 34 counts of fraud. The investigation alleged that Trump approved a scheme of illegal payments aimed at increasing his chances of winning in 2016. This, according to the prosecution, violated New York state and federal election laws.
