Two administration officials warned that the president could suddenly decide he wanted to speak to the Kremlin chief. They told him, however, that a phone call was not a good idea unless Putin told the White House that he agreed to a full ceasefire in the Russian-Ukrainian war.
As a reminder, Russia is still counting on Trump to conclude a peace deal on Ukraine that is acceptable to Moscow. At the same time, Russian dictator Putin is ready to continue the war if the negotiations fail.
