State Duma of Russia warns NATO against enlargement

The State Duma of the Russian Federation has drafted an address to parliamentary assemblies of NATO and OSCE, as well as to national parliaments of the Balkan states, warning about possibility of a new cold war.

This is reported by Censor.NET citing LIGA.

The statement stresses the need "to activate the dialogue due to a threat of locating of U.S. missile defense systems in the territory of Eastern European countries and NATO's enlargement policy in Eastern and Southeastern Europe."

Duma deputies believe that NATO's expansion to Eastern Europe is "a dangerous line aimed not at defense, but at stirring of a new cold war."

The Russian parliament offers to "jointly assess possible consequences of such steps and draft proposals aimed at creation of favorable conditions to ease international tensions."

Duma MPs are "seriously concerned with the policy of involvement of Montenegro to NATO," which, they believe, divides the Montenegrin society and creates high level of social and political tensions in the country.
