Russia has launched a secret military satellite into orbit
On 24 August, Russia launched a spacecraft into orbit that is intended to serve the needs of the aggressor country’s Ministry of Defence.
According to Censor.NET, this is stated in a press release from the Russian Ministry of Defence.
The Soyuz-2.1b launch vehicle was launched from the Plesetsk military spaceport in the Arkhangelsk region.
Once the spacecraft had been placed in its intended orbit, control was handed over to ground-based assets of the Space Forces of the Russian Federation’s Aerospace Forces.
The Russian Ministry of Defence has stated that telemetry links with the satellite remain stable and that its on-board systems are operating normally.
Russia is not revealing the purpose of the aircraft
The Russian Ministry of Defence has not disclosed which satellite was launched into orbit or what tasks it will carry out.
The statement contains no information regarding the name of the spacecraft, its technical specifications, orbital parameters or specific purpose
Plesetsk was attacked by a UAV
On 23 August, the day before the launch, reports emerged of a drone attack in the Plesetsk area. Eyewitnesses spotted a plume of smoke near the spaceport. However, there is no public confirmation of damage to any military facility.
Russia’s space activity has increased significantly this year. According to Ars Technica, the first few months of 2026 marked the busiest period for Plesetsk in terms of the number of launches since at least 2022.
Russia is also deploying a new low-Earth orbit satellite system, ‘Rassvet’, which it plans to expand to 900 satellites in the future.
At the same time, the Russian Ministry of Defence has not disclosed any details that would enable the military capabilities of the new satellite to be determined. Its potential role in reconnaissance, communications or surveillance remains unknown.
