There will be no winner in Russia’s war against Ukraine; it will end in negotiations, - Rubio
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed the view that the Russian-Ukrainian war will not have a clear-cut winner. In his opinion, the only logical outcome of this conflict will be the signing of a peace treaty, which will sooner or later bring the hostilities to an end.
He made this statement to the media, according to Censor.NET, citing RBC-Ukraine.
There is still no peace agreement
During the conversation, he said that while there is currently no peace agreement, it makes perfect sense. According to him, the war benefits neither side, and ultimately it must end through negotiations, since neither side will emerge victorious.
Obviously, it’s not in Ukraine’s interest, and for Russia, it’s simply disastrous. What I mean is that they’re not making any headway in this war. They simply aren’t. So it would make perfect sense to end it... It won’t end with some crushing military victory by one side over the other. It will end with an agreement reached through negotiations," Rubio said.
At the same time, he added that in foreign policy and on issues such as this, "sometimes what makes sense doesn't necessarily happen."
Trump's willingness to promote dialogue
In this regard, Rubio explained President Donald Trump’s position by saying that if an opportunity arises in the U.S. to bring about change and bridge the differences between the two sides, the president is ready to do so.
"We will continue to try to do this. But it’s clear that we’re not there yet. I hope that will change. And I think it eventually will. At some point, this war must end. And the war in Ukraine will end with an agreement reached following negotiations... And the sooner that happens, the fewer people will die and the less destruction there will be," the Secretary of State concluded.
- Rubio had previously stressed that Ukraine and Russia must agree to an energy truce.
