In northern Poland, search is underway for unidentified aerial object that was approaching from direction of Kaliningrad region: aircraft have been scrambled
In northern Poland, dozens of military personnel, police officers, and rescue workers are searching for an unidentified aerial object that may have crashed near Malbork in the Pomeranian Voivodeship. According to radar data, it was travelling from the direction of the Russian Kaliningrad region.
According to Censor.NET, citing RMF FM, several dozen members of the Polish Territorial Defence Forces, police officers and rescue workers, as well as aeroplanes and helicopters, were deployed to the search operation.
According to radar data, an unidentified object was moving from the north, from the direction of the Kaliningrad region in the Russian Federation, at a speed consistent with the wind speed.
At the same time, the Polish military has not yet been able to determine exactly what the radar systems detected. Nor is there definitive confirmation that the object violated Poland’s airspace.
Sources at RMF FM suggest that it may have been a hot-air balloon or, in particular, a flock of birds.
According to procedure, if an unidentified object disappears from radar, ground crews are dispatched to the area where it is thought to have fallen to investigate. On this occasion, a helicopter was also deployed as part of the search operation.

Border checks were temporarily suspended, but resumed once the alert was lifted.
- In Poland, on the morning of 23 September, operations at Rzeszów and Lublin airports were temporarily suspended following the Russian attack on Ukraine. The restrictions were introduced to ensure that the Polish Air Force could operate freely.
- On 23 September, the Polish military recorded a violation of the state border by a Russian Mi-8 helicopter flying from the Kaliningrad region. In response, Poland scrambled fighter jets and put its ground forces and equipment on alert.
