In the Odesa region, a 39-year-old man is to stand trial after, according to the investigation, he organised a scheme to smuggle a conscript abroad under the guise of a crew member on a foreign vessel. He demanded $6,000 to arrange the paperwork and was arrested in Izmail whilst the money was being handed over.

This was reported by the public prosecutor’s office, as relayed by Censor.NET.

According to the investigation, last year the accused met a man of conscription age, who had previously worked as a seaman, and offered to help him leave Ukraine.

For $6,000, he promised to prepare documents that would allow the conscript to cross the state border as a crew member of a foreign vessel.

Specifically, this involved arranging for him to undergo special training, obtain the relevant qualifications and documents confirming his inclusion in the crew.

The conscript received some of the documents by post. Among them was a forged certificate of qualification as a watch engineer.

During a meeting in Izmail, where the accused was due to receive money, he was detained by law enforcement officers.

The indictment against the 39-year-old resident of the Odesa region has now been referred to court. He is charged with organising the illegal smuggling of persons across Ukraine’s state border and criminal influence.
