Zelenskyy outlined conditions for ending hot phase of war with Russia

We must maintain a strong army and obtain security guarantees, says Zelenskyy

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the transition to a diplomatic settlement requires reliable security guarantees, a strong Ukrainian army, and the continuation of sanctions against Russia. The president also emphasized the importance of support from partners and Ukraine’s accession to NATO.

According to Censor.NET, he said this in an interview on the show "Piers Morgan Uncensored."

According to Zelenskyy, the end of the active phase of the war must not give Russia the opportunity to prepare for a new attack. Therefore, Ukraine needs security guarantees that will protect the country not only immediately after the cessation of hostilities, but also in the years to come.

Why Ukraine Needs a Strong Army

The president cited Ukraine’s accession to NATO as one of the key factors for security. In his view, membership in the Alliance should ensure that, in the event of renewed Russian aggression, Ukraine will not be left to face the enemy alone.

At the same time, Zelenskyy emphasized that the mere prospect of joining NATO is not enough. Ukraine must maintain its own defense capabilities and not agree to any reduction in its armed forces that could jeopardize its security.

"The Ukrainian army should be the largest professional army in Europe," the president said.

Ukraine Needs Security Guarantees

Among the key conditions, Zelenskyy cited specific commitments from international partners, particularly the United States, as well as the participation of European countries in ensuring Ukraine’s security.

The president supported the idea of having representatives from partner countries present in Ukraine after hostilities cease. According to him, this could deter Russia from launching another offensive.

Separately, Zelenskyy highlighted security in the Black Sea and the possibility of involving partners in monitoring compliance with agreements, particularly to ensure the functioning of maritime routes.

The president also stressed the need to maintain sanctions against Russia. In his view, easing the restrictions could give Moscow more opportunities to rebuild its military capabilities and increase the risk of a new invasion.

Zelenskyy spoke on the territorial issue

During the interview, Piers Morgan raised the issue of the territories occupied by Russia and possible compromises to end the war.

Zelenskyy acknowledged that this is one of the most difficult issues in the negotiations and noted that it must be resolved with the direct participation of the leaders of Ukraine and Russia.

The president emphasized that Ukraine does not trust the Kremlin, so any agreements must include real guarantees of compliance. He also rejected an approach under which Ukraine would cede territory without receiving effective mechanisms to protect itself against further aggression.

According to Zelenskyy, a ceasefire or a freeze on the conflict will not ensure lasting peace if Russia uses the lull to prepare for a new offensive.

Thus, Ukraine’s position on ending the active phase of the war calls for a combination of diplomacy and military capability, support from allies, international pressure on Russia, and guarantees to prevent another attack.
