The Pentagon asks Baltic states to tone down sharp statements about Russia

In recent weeks, representatives of the Pentagon have called on several NATO countries to be more restrained in their statements regarding the threat posed by Russia. They argued that some statements by European leaders and officials undermine the continent’s security

According to Censor.NET, Reuters reports this, citing sources.

What is known?

Among the countries that have been advised to refrain from making public statements are Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia.

These messages were conveyed during bilateral meetings. At the same time, it is unknown whether the governments of other European countries received similar communications.

"The U.S. requests came as the Donald Trump administration resumed efforts to bring about a negotiated end to the full-scale war in Ukraine, which has been ongoing for five years now."

"The latest initiative involves combining incentives for Russia—including the easing of sanctions—with pressure on Ukraine to stop attacks on Russian energy infrastructure," the publication writes.

In particular, statements by European leaders that Russia had found itself in a dead-end situation caught the attention of U.S. officials

The Pentagon's Response

When asked to comment on this information, the Pentagon stated: "Private conversations between allies remain private, so we will not comment on these allegations."

One of the U.S. officials who conveyed such messages was Elbridge Colby, head of the Pentagon's Policy Directorate—a key figure in the ongoing review of U.S. troop levels in Europe, according to sources.
