Italian Defense Minister Crosetto proposes to extend military aid mechanism for Kyiv through 2027

Italy proposes to extend the military aid mechanism for Ukraine

Italian Defense Minister Crosetto will present another package of military aid for Ukraine to a parliamentary committee next week. He will also propose extending the special mechanism for defense supplies to Ukraine through 2027.

This was reported by Censor.NET, citing ANSA.

What is known?

According to him, Rome's policy of supporting Kyiv will remain unchanged going forward, despite opposition from Deputy Prime Minister and "League" party leader Matteo Salvini.

"The new aid package for Kyiv will be discussed at Copasir [Parliamentary Committee for the Security of the Republic] next week.

I will also propose extending the decree-based mechanism" into next year—a mechanism that was not initiated by the Meloni government.

Some people seem to have forgotten that this mechanism was chosen and voted for by the Draghi government, with the support of virtually all the parties now in the opposition as well as those in the majority.

While positions have evolved over time, the fact remains that if it was right then, it is difficult to explain why it would be wrong now." Crosetto said.

Aid package

According to LaPresse and Reuters, a new aid package has already been prepared and will be Italy’s first military shipment in 2026.

In October, Crosetto stated that Italy had already delivered 12 aid packages to Ukraine and expected to approve another one by the end of the year.
