A record-breaking batch of amber is worth some $3 million by preliminary estimates.
As reported by Censor.NET, this was announced by the Interior Minister Arsen Avakov on his Facebook page.
"It ain't bags with debris. These are bags packed with amber!
"This night, a special group of the Interior Ministry in the Rivne region detained more than 2.5 tons (!) of illegally mined solar stone packaged to be sent abroad.
"According to preliminary estimates, the record-breaking batch of amber is worth about $3 million! The weight and composition of the stone fractions intended for smuggling, as well as their value will be determined by experts in Kyiv, where the cargo is currently being taken under armed guard.
"This is a large operation prepared by the Interior Ministry and the State Fiscal Service to expose and curb actions of the largest criminal group operating in the Rivne region and parasitizing on illegal extraction of amber. This is not the end, the names will be revealed - of a well-known odious former MP, corrupt law enforcers and government officials... - we will not fail on our job. But!.. As I already mentioned before, a law has to be passed regulating state control, extraction and marketing of amber!
"... The seized amber will be inventoried and presented to public in the coming hours in Kyiv to prevent it from various "mishappenings." It will become a part of the state treasury," Avakov wrote.
