The night before, thousands of people took to the streets of major cities in Slovakia to protest against the plans of the new government led by Prime Minister Robert Fico to amend criminal law.

This is reported by AP, Censor.NET informs.

According to the local police, about 20,000 people took part in the rally in Bratislava's central square.

The protest in the Slovak capital was attended by one of the leaders of the opposition party "Progressive Slovakia" Michal Šimečka.

"You are making the same mistake as any other failed dictator. You underestimate the people's desire for freedom and justice," Šimečka said, addressing Fico.

The crowd repeatedly chanted: "Mafia, mafia" and "We've had enough of Fico".

It is noted that the changes proposed by the Fico government include a proposal to dissolve the special prosecutor's office that deals with serious crimes such as bribery, organised crime and extremism.

From the first relatively small protest of a few hundred people on 7 December in Bratislava, anti-government rallies spread to 19 cities and towns across the country.
